Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

Updated: Jul 7

Brown butter chocolate chip cookies are a gourmet take on a beloved classic, and yet, are easy to make! They are chewy on the inside and crispy on the edges. The brown butter adds a depth, richness, and irresistible nutty flavor that feels like a luxury.

Makes 12 large cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) salted butter

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup + 2 teaspoons white sugar

  • 1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 egg

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1-1/4 cups chocolate chips

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two sheet pans with parchment paper.

2. Place the butter in a medium saucepan, and place over medium heat. Cook until the butter has melted, and then continue to cook, swirling the pan often and stirring with a whisk, until the butter foams and turns golden brown and nutty - this should take 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes.

3. In a bowl, add the brown and white sugar. Pour in the brown butter and mix for 2-3 minutes. Add the egg and vanilla and mix for an additional 1-2 minutes, or until the mixture has lightened in color and has thickened.

4. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix to combine with a rubber spatula until just combined. Add the chocolate and stir, being careful not to over-mix as this will make the dough tough and dense.

5. Scoop 6 cookies using a 2 Tbsp cookie scoop onto each of the prepared baking sheets. Arrange evenly apart on the pan.

6. Bake the cookies for 11-13 minutes, until the edges are set. Bake for longer if you would like your cookies to be crispier. Cool for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
