These pastries are a spooky, yet adorable breakfast or dessert perfect for Halloween parties or a fun snack. Each hand pie is filled with red fruit jelly and wrapped in a mummy-like fashion with strips of crescent dough. This simple mummy pie recipe is an easy activity for kids to help with too!
Makes 12 hand pies
Ingredients:
Mummy Pies:
2 cans Pillsbury crescent dough
1/2 cup red fruit jelly (raspberry, strawberry)
eyeball candy sprinkles
Egg Wash:
1 egg
1 Tablespoon water
Glaze:
1 cup powdered sugar
1-2 Tablespoons milk
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
2. Unroll 1 can of crescent dough. Using a pizza cutter, cut the dough in half and then cut each half into 6 equal rectangular pieces. Carefully transfer the cut dough onto the lined cookie sheet.
3. Unroll the second can of crescent dough. Cut unto 4 equal sized rectangles, and slice into thin strips (about 1/2 inch wide); set aside.
4. Let's make the egg wash: In a small bowl, whisk the egg and water together until thoroughly combined.
5. Using a pastry brush, brush a thin coat of egg wash onto each rectangle. Place about 1 Tablespoon of red fruit jelly in the center of each rectangle. Layer crescent strips over the jelly, making sure to leave a space for the eyeball sprinkles. Brush the tops of the pies with egg wash.
6. Bake the pies for 10-15 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown. Remove from the oven, and cool completely.
7. Make the glaze by mixing the milk and powdered sugar in a small bowl. Add the milk a little at a time, because you don't want your glaze to be too runny. Drizzle the glaze onto the cooled pastries and place 2 eyeball candies on the jelly to allow them to stick. Enjoy!
NOTE: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
